Is Your Music Good Enough?
February 19, 2006

Is your music "good enough?" Is your promotional material (your bio, retail one sheet, etc.) "good enough?" Is your website "good enough?"

Its always so funny to listen to artists over the phone or in person try to justify their laziness to move their music and their career to the next level by replying its "good enough" to whatever you ask them. Its like the scenario of the people who go to a store to buy a replacement part for something that's broken. By habit they shop by price first and if the part will solve the problem temporary or permanently, second. Nine times out of ten they buy the cheapest item, install it, realize that it isn't the best solution to the problem and then try to convince themselves and others who question it by saying "its good enough."

Stop and think about your music, your promotional materials, your live shows, your site and your career. Can they be better? Did you burn your own CDs instead of having them manufactured? You saved a few hundred bucks but do the industry people take you seriously when they see your burned CD? They just don't say they don't to you.

Did you slap together a press kit instead of taking the time to create and write an Artist Profile? The usual press kit with the same mistakes that thousands of artist make that don't get the results they wanted either?

How about your live shows? Do you look and play just like the last artist or band before you or after you? Don't worry I could go on for hours!

God forbid that you get the major label or record deal that some artists so desperately seek, not knowing what they are getting themselves into only to see the label not really push your CD or lose faith because of the lack of sales. Then the label rep or the President of the company says, "we put the CD out that's good enough."

Speaking of God, I bet you can't wait until you die and he says "How was your life? Was it everything you wanted and hoped it would be? Did you do something different than everyone around you? Did you make a difference in your life? Did your music impact people? Are you happy how your life turned out?" Just think, you can reply, "it was good enough."

I would end here but Here is a great real life example. Recently at a dinner I had with an artist that I am working with, I told this story to him to impress upon him that he needed to do more with his music. When he left the table to go to the restroom, his girlfriend started talking about their relationship. I said the best part about relationships is when you are really connected with someone and you feel strongly about them. Her reply was, "well I don't know about that, but he's good enough for right now."

If you are ready to move past "good enough," call me or email me directly. If you are serious about selling CDs or finding a new girlfriend that won't think you are "good enough right now" come to Music Strategies (http://www.MusicStrategies.com)
