Plug Pulled on LOLLAPALOOZA
July 19, 2004

Just three weeks prior to kickoff, organizers of Lollapalooza pulled the plug on the festival, citing poor ticket sales as the primary factor for cancelling the 31-date, 16-city tour. Among the notable bands at this year's festical were Spearhead, Morrissey, Sonic Youth, the Flaming Lips and the String Cheese Incident.

"The sadness upon hearing about the dismantlement of our tour has quickly turned to anger," read a statement from co-founder Perry Farrell. "To watch something that you put so many hours of love and time into set ablaze sets my pride on fire. But, like the Phoenix, we still intend to rise. Our campaign will continue for the musicians, the artists, and all those attempting to change the world. Our voices will be heard."

The decision came on June 21, when organizers reportedly realized they were on track to lose millions of dollars. New York was the only market that did not have advance ticket sales below estimates.

"On the average, had ticket sales not dramatically picked up which they showed no indication of doing the people involved faced losses in the mid-to-high six figures on a per-show basis," said the William Morris Agency's Marc Geiger, another Lollapalooza co-founder.

Lollapalooza built a reputation early in its 13-year history for eclectic lineups, but as the years passed, it had repeated trouble with draw. After 1997, the tour took a break until last year when it returned with a lineup that featured Jane's Addiction, Queens of the Stone Age and Audioslave.

Fans who purchased tickets will be refunded at point of purchase.
